Someone is killing all of the male street prostitutes in Hollywood, California. The LAPD has labeled the crimes "NHI" - No Humans Involved. Officer Stephen Cainen risks more than his career when he single-handedly tries to solve the savage torture-killings. The LAPD management doesn't care if Cainen catches the killers, or the killers get Cainen. Either way they win. With no back-up from his department, Cainen is stalked by the vicious killers. Can Cainen stay alive long enough to stop the slaughter of L.A.'s youth? Based on an explosive true story, Outside The Badge gives a compelling insight into the workings of the LAPD and the management that rules it like a dynasty. Featured on 60 Minutes, Phil Donahue, and The Geraldo Rivera Show, author Mitchell Grobeson is the first openly gay officer in LAPD's history. Joining the force in 1981, Grobeson became one of it's most highly decorated officers. Despite his saving a record number of lives, the LAPD waged a campaign of harassment against Grobeson including several attempts to have him killed. Sgt. Grobeson is the first officer in the nation to sue a police department for sexual orientation discrimination, which resulted in a 1993 landmark settlement, ordering the LAPD to halt its discriminatory practices. Many of the incidents portrayed in Outside The Badge are based on Sgt. Grobeson's actual experiences in the LAPD.

I loved it.

I don't know what the First Edition was like, but I strongly recommmend the Second Edition for both gay and straight readers. Amazing in its powerful story, revealing both the inner workings of the LAPD, the insights into the mind of a serial killer, and the courage of the only police officer to stand up to try and stop the historic "Rodney King beating" and infamous "Rampart Scandal." This former LAPD Sergeant overcame incredible harassment, and still remains pro-LAPD.

I recommend this book to only certain types of people: Those who have any interest whatsoever in either crime, martial arts, law enforcement, murder mysteries, gay politics, human relationships, or the human condition. If you are such a person, you will probably find this book very interesting, albeit perhaps rather disturbing. Or rather, you will find this book very interesting because of the rather disturbing truths that it reveals, documents, puts in front of your face in a blaze of dramatic flare. Seriously, it's an enjoyable read. Read it, dude.

"LAMBDA BOOK REPORT wrote this up as "a chilling and fascinating page-turner" based on actual serial killings going on in Los Angeles, and the experiences of the author as the first openly gay police officer whose life was threatened while in the LAPD. This book is not for the faint-hearted; it is very graphic and what they did to Grobeson was absolutely horrendous. An incredible first-hand account from someone who lived through the experience. I couldn't put it down once I started reading!

A truly extraordinary book! I had never before heard of the author, but I saw his book while browsing at a bookstore. I couldn't put it down, and got about a fourth of the way through when the store loudspeaker said it was closing time. I bought it, took it home, and didn't fall asleep until I had completed my first reading of this extraordinary page-turner. I do NOT recommend it if you are trying to fall asleep, because it will keep you awake! But I DO recommend it, and recommend it highly, if you want a beautifully crafted work of fiction. It is suspenseful, exciting, lurid, informative, and very well written. Much of it was based on the gruesome realities of the LAPD; the author was an LAPD cop and successfully fought a classic David-versus-Goliath battle against the powerful LAPD in a landmark sexual orientation harassment case. I highly recommend this page-turner!

If you've met the author, you know all you need to know about this book. And recognizing that he has posed himself for the cover of a novel says even more. A better title would have been "All About Me".

This book is riveting....I could not put it down. Mitch Grobeson is a really good storyteller. Would suggest it to anyone who is interested in a Gay hero dealing with a brutal nemisis. The author has put a lot of LAPD insider information into the plot and the main character-Steve. The parallels between Steve and Sgt Mitch made me want to be there giving Sgt Mitch, and Steve backup in any way I could..... Hope he writes another...
